Learning Disability: Raja Rajendran

Service User/Carer Governor (Learning Disability)

I'm a Service User/Carer Governor representing service user and carer members who use our Learning Disability Services. I've been a Governor since 2016.

Governor: Raja Rajendran
Service User/Carer Governor (Learning Disability): Raja Rajendran

About me

I live in Erith in the Bexley Borough. I've worked in the Civil Service for the Ministry of Justice for 14 years, at its Headquarters. My area of work is financial governance. Previously, I had worked in the banking sector for 28 years.

My key strengths are customer service, networking, stakeholder management and working with others.

In 2009, I attended the Queen's Garden Tea Party. This was in recognition of my contribution for a project in the Civil Service. I completed a Law degree from the University of London.

Why I became a Governor

I became a Governor because I believe that the role offers great opportunities. I want to use these opportunities and add value to the role.

Oxleas has played a crucial role in my life. Bexley Learning Disability Team at Stuart House has given valuable support and help to my son, who has a learning disability.

Personally, I have benefited from the services of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Team based at Goldie Leigh. The team supported me in recovery and rehabilitation after my heart transplant in March 2015. Becoming a Governor gives me the opportunity to be an ambassador of Oxleas and a voice for the members, especially from the Learning Disability constituency.

My focus is on the Learning Disability Services provided by Oxleas. I take every opportunity to interact with the service users, identify areas of concern and reflect them to the Trust. I try to work closely with key staff in the learning disability teams to know more about the services. My aim is to raise the profile of this service user group. Being in the Membership Committee, I hope to contribute to create an awareness and increase membership.

The best thing about being a Governor is that I am proud to be part of an organisation which aims to improve peoples' lives.

My interests and hobbies

I have a passion for poetry, especially limericks. I am a member of Ace of Hearts - a cardiac support group. In the Erith Veterans' Club, I like playing table-tennis during leisure times. I am also a co-ordinator for the Neighbourhood Watch locally. I also take part in fund-raising events for the British Heart Foundation.
