10 Minute CBT (April 2012)

Depression and anxiety linked to a long term condition are some of the most common health problems seen by GPs and managing patients with these and other emotional and physical problems can be a challenge.

To support local GPs, Oxleas ran a masterclass on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to introduce the concept of 10 Minute CBT.

This free evening masterclass was open to all GPs and practice staff in Bexley, Greenwich and Bromley. The aims of the masterclass were to:

  • Raise awareness of local services providing CBT and other psychological therapies
  • Provide a ‘taster’ session on 10 Minute CBT - simple strategies for managing mental ill health and promoting wellbeing through framing your approach and questioning using a CBT model
  • Raise awareness of local initiatives to provide training to GPs and AHPs in brief CBT skills for use in usual primary care consultations (10 Minute CBT).

Our main speaker on Wednesday 25 April was Danuta Orlowska, Clinical Psychologist from 10 Minute CBT. Local speakers included Katy Grazebrook, Oxleas’ Clinical Lead/Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Greenwich Time to Talk - Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) in Primary Care, Debbie Brewin, Clinical Lead, Being Well in Bexley, Bexley MIND & Vimbai Egaru, IAPT Clinical Lead, Working for Wellbeing, Bromley Healthcare.

Each presentation included opportunities to ask questions and to discuss issues experienced in your practice. Attendance certificates were given.
