End of Life Care and Mental Capacity Assessment (Oct 2012)

Managing a patient’s care towards the end of their life can mean facing situations and challenges which may be difficult to deal with. Ensuring appropriate drug regimes are in place to maintain the patient’s comfort and dignity at the end of their life, that patients are involved in their care as much as possible and ensuring appropriate services are in place to support them, their family or carer are real situations GPs face.

This free evening masterclass was open to all GPs and practice staff in Bexley, Greenwich and Bromley. It covered:

  • An update on Mental Capacity Assessments
  • Recent developments in end of life care: the Advanced Dementia Care at Home pilot in Bexley
  • Providing appropriate medication to meet the needs of patients with terminal illness at home.

Mental Capacity Assessments: Dr Adrian Treloar, Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Old Age Psychiatry & Clinical Director Older Peoples' Mental Health Services, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.

End of Life Care: Dr Monica Crugel, Speciality Registrar in Old Age Psychiatry, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust; Dr Andrew Williams, Associate Specialist in Palliative Medicine, Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.
