Mental Capacity Act (October 2016)

Dr Oluwatoyin Sorinmade, Dr Sunita Sahu and Dr Adrian Treloar, Consultants in Old Age Psychiatry from our Older People's Mental Health Service offered this Masterclass to GPs and practice staff within Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.

Dr Sorinmade is the trust's Clinical Lead on the Mental Capacity Act. 

The objectives of this masterclass for GPs were to:

  • improve skills and knowledge in seeking patients' consent to care, assessing mental capacity and engaging in the best interests process. 
  • understand provisions in the Mental Capacity Act for transporting a person to hospital or care home where the individual lacks consenting capacity. 
  • increase understanding of the lawful process and clinical issues in administering medications covertly in care homes.
  • increase understanding of the essence of Lasting Powers of Attorney.
  • explore the implications of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLs) on death certification.
