This masterclass was presented by Drs Angela Mijovic, Olivia Edmondson and Sue Jennings from our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. The sessions covered the following:

  • Best practice guidelines for managing young people who self-harm: this session presented by Dr Angela Mijovic enabled you to understand the risk factors contributing to self-harm, predictors of repetition, appropriate interventions and key challenges to prevention.
  • Risk assessment in adolescents and when to refer: this session presented by Dr Olivia Edmondson enabled you to understand the possible functions of self harm and how to assess these; creating a safety/crisis plan with young people and families and understanding the circumstances where young people should present to A&E and alternatives to A&E.
  • Suicide in children and young people: this session presented by Dr Sue Jennings enabled you to understand the risk factors contributing to completed suicide; the relationship between suicide, self-harm and other mental health difficulties in young people; gain knowledge of evidence base for interventions to reduce suicide in young people; understand how other agencies and in particular schools, can be involved in building resilience and improving young people’s emotional wellbeing; and understand challenges regarding interventions to reduce suicide in young people.
