Several recent reports have highlighted the inequalities in health care experienced by people with learning disabilities. In these reports, recommendations have been made to the Department of Health and local health services around specific improvements necessary to support people with learning disabilities and ensure equality of health outcome.

In some cases, to ensure people with learning disabilities have the opportunity to be as healthy as the general population, extra support is needed. This ‘extra support’ affects all NHS services as part of the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) and the reports included below describe the extent and nature of support that is needed.
