Pulmonary rehabilitation in prisons

Pulmonary rehabilitation in prisons

Specialist Physiotherapist Helen Jefford and Respiratory Nurse Specialist Nina Turner developed an innovative project to introduce a programme of pulmonary rehabilitation at Maidstone Prison.

The aim was that prisoners with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) could improve their fitness levels and benefit from the same level of support as people outside in the community.

The success of the project led to a Nursing Times Award last year and it was named NHS England's 6Cs Live! Story of the Month April 2014.

In May 2014 the pair launched 'Pulmonary rehabilitation in prisons' - a guide to setting up and delivering a pulmonary rehabilitation programme in prisons at the Association of Respiratory Nurse Specialist's Annual Conference.
