A team from Oxleas has shared its expertise in producing educational videos at a conference attended by healthcare professionals from across the country.

They led a lively workshop on using film to enhance team work in mental health settings and improve Mental Health Act training at the conference organised by NHS London and the London Deanery Simulation and Technology-enhanced Learning Initiative (STeLI).

Held on Monday 17 December at the prestigious Royal College of Physicians in London’s Regent’s Park, the Educational Excellence Conference: Inter-professional education – making teams work better, showcased how STeLI has been supporting and promoting excellence and local ownership of clinical education in London.

The Oxleas team, led by Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Director of Medical Education Dr Antonina Ingrassia, talked about using video content in two STeLI funded training packages that they have developed. Dr Ingrassia was supported by team members Julian Bowman, filmmaker; Buki Ogunde, Learning and Development Manager, Medical Education; Sherri Emery, Postgraduate Medical Education Administrator and Andrew Mayor, Communications Officer.

The videos use actors and staff members to dramatise – or simulate – real life scenes which are then used by facilitators in training sessions.

People in the packed workshop were keenly interested to hear how the Oxleas team had been able to create an innovative and stimulating learning resource within a very tight budget and to learn about the practical aspects of organising and delivering the project.

The training packages are already in use in the trust and are available to trusts across London from the STeLI website.
