We are one of the most gay friendly places to work in the NHS, according to a recent survey.

The health service in general is the second most gay friendly employment sector, according to Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index.

Nine NHS organisations were listed among the top 100 employers for 2014, an increase from six last year by the charity that fights discrimination against gay people.

We came 52nd in the overall list and fourth among NHS organisations. The three NHS organisations that finished above us were: Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust which was second; The London Ambulance Service Trust, which finished 19th in the overall list and the Central and North West London Foundation Trust, which was 23rd.

Chief Executive, Stephen Firn said: “I am delighted that Stonewall has found Oxleas to offer an inclusive workplace for our lesbian, gay and bisexual employees. Our workforce is our most valuable resource and people are more productive, creative and successful when they feel confident, supported and secure to be themselves at work.”

Equality and Human Rights Adviser, Christine Rivers, said: “We are delighted with the result.” She said the trust would not however be standing still and there were already plans for a Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender service user consultation event in the future.

The Workplace Equality Index is Britain's leading tool for employers to measure their efforts to tackle discrimination and create inclusive workplaces for lesbian, gay and bisexual employees. Since 2005, more than 750 major employers have taken part in the Index using Stonewall's criteria as a model for good practice.

Each year Stonewall receives hundreds of submissions to the Workplace Equality Index, its annual audit of workplace culture for gay staff, to showcase the progress being made in so many workplaces towards full equality for Britain’s 1.7 million lesbian, gay and bisexual employees.
