Join us to support Breastfeeding Celebration Week

News: Unicef baby friendly logo

This week is Breastfeeding Celebration Week and the theme this year is supporting breastfeeding during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Our Health Visiting Service is a Unicef Baby Friendly fully accredited service.

On 23 March 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of our health visiting service staff began working from home, offering telephone consultation for all contacts, and face-to-face contact where essential with use of PPE.

All staff continued to use their considerable knowledge, skills and experience to support Greenwich families with feeding their babies and young children during this difficult time.

The Greenwich breastfeeding groups and Health Advice Sessions normally held in local Children’s Centres had to be closed.

The Infant Feeding team instead has provided continued phone and video support using a health professional referral pathway and client self-referral via the health visiting duty telephone line and email service, particularly to support parents with breastfeeding and mixed feeding.

Jane Wells, Director of Nursing, said: "I’d like to thank the health visitors and infant feeding team for their commitment and responsiveness to support families during these unprecedented times. This has been vital for new parents and families and feedback clearly shows this support has helped many ‘keep going’."

Show your support

As part of #BreastfeedingCelebrationWeek, women are being asked to share their stories and say thank you to the people who have supported them on their breastfeeding journey.

Our services will be following a planned, graduated return to face-to-face contacts following the most up to date national and NHS guidance.

Parents and professionals can find out more about our return to ‘new normal’ services and our existing support on the Oxleas Health Visiting page.

Here you will also find information about help from our partner Children’s Centres, Royal Borough of Greenwich and other local support.

The Oxleas Parent Online resources on this page also help parents with evidence based reliable online information at this challenging time including feeding their babies.
