Annual Members' Meeting (AMM) 2012

The 2012 Annual Members’ Meeting (AMM) was held on Wednesday 26 September 2012 at IndigO2 at The O2 in Greenwich.

The day was our biggest event of the year, with interactive stalls, activities, health checks and more.  One of the main attractions this year was Life & Deaf - in which deaf young people dynamically explored their identity through poetry in English and British Sign Language live on stage. Young deaf poets celebrated the role of creative arts in promoting positive self-esteem, confident self-expression and strong emotional literacy.

ResearchNet, a group of service user volunteers, held a session on patient experience in our seminar and film room. They were followed by Occupational Therapist Helen Garrod, who talked about the Big Summer Dance, a national celebration of dance and her experience of performing in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

The audience were then treated to a talk from Conservative MP and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Mental Health, Charles Walker, as he spoke about how he has lived with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) for more than 30 years.

The MP went on to describe how outdated some laws are that discriminate against people with mental health problems. He said he and other parliamentary colleagues are working on a Bill to change some of these unfair rules. He described it as wrong that a juror with mental health issues may not be able to serve on a jury - but a barrister or judge that might have mental health problems can continue to work.

At the end of his address Mr Walker took a few questions from the audience. He was asked how his parliamentary colleagues reacted to his revelations. He said: "They reacted very warmly and positively."

Our directors then took the opportunity to tell members and staff about what has been happening in the trust over the past year and how we are doing. This was followed by our Staff Recognition Awards, a celebration of some of the brightest stars that work for Oxleas.
