Continence Advisory Service Bexley, Greenwich

The Continence Advisory Service provides advice, support and management of bladder and bowel dysfunctions, including urinary stress, overflow and urgency problems, constipation and diarrhoea. Continence equipment and/or products can be provided by the service to those who need them.

If you are experiencing continence problems, the service will invite you to attend a continence advisory clinic, which are held in locations across the borough. If you are housebound and unable to get to a clinic, we will usually arrange for you to be assessed by a district nurse, who will contact the service for advice.

How to access this service

To be able to access the service, you will need to be registered with a GP in Bexley or Greenwich and/or live in the borough. Referrals are taken from health and social care professionals. You can also self refer to the service (call the Central Access Team on 020 8320 3550).

Oxleas Patient Experience survey

The Oxleas Patient Experience survey gives you the opportunity to feedback on the care and treatment you have received. We also encourage your friends, family and carers to also provide feedback. Hearing your views gives us a better understanding of the needs of our patients, families and carers which helps us to make sure that we are providing a good standard of care. 

The short survey only takes a few minutes to complete and you can provide a written comment explaining what you think is working well and what is not. The Patient Experience team will collect the results of the surveys and these are shared with the relevant departments and management teams. This helps us to shape our services to continually improve the quality of the care and treatment we provide.

I was concerned to read somewhere that Greenwich Council might in future only collect domestic rubbish every two weeks instead of every week. My husband is doubly incontinent and uses four of the largest pads available every day, so each week we fill a black-topped bin with them. If they are only collected every fortnight they will be very insanitary and smelly. I have written to the council and to our local councillors to tell them the potential results of this possible change. Would it be a good idea for the incontinence centre to also tell the Council that this change would also affect your patients?

Thank you for raising this issue with us. I have spoken with the Lead nurse for the continence team and can confirm, that we have had no formal communication with Greenwich Council in relation to reduced frequency of refuse collection.

I understand, that any reduction in refuse collection would have an impact for yourself and also for other patients receiving products from Oxleas Continence Service.

I will follow up your query with our colleagues in Greenwich Council to ascertain what arrangements would be put in place, to support disposal of continence products if a reduction in services is planned. I will advise you of their response.

My Gran is hesitant to speak to any healthcare professionals about her incontinence - she currently buys her own pads online and really likes the brand; if she were to come to you guys, would you be able to offer the same products she likes for free?

Our Continence team of Specialist nurses will be able to asses your Gran’s needs and provide products appropriately from our agreed formulary.

We run clinics in sites across the borough and also can visit your Gran at home if she is housebound.

The above info and a leaflet I had tells me that I can self refer to the service. However, when I rang the Central Access Team, I was told that I have to be referred by GP. Which is the correct information please?

You are absolutely correct that the Continence Service will accept self-referrals and you do not need to ask your GP to refer you.

The Central Access Team have been reminded that this is the case and so this should be prevented from happening again in future. Please ask them to send your details to the Continence Service and you should be contacted shortly.

Re last post - Mediquip still don't know when they are going to deliver my son's continence pads - despite numerous phone calls and messages and their contact with your service manager. I understand your staff have trouble getting hold of them too. No one at Mediquip seems to have access to any information on my son's deliveries or continence supplies. We seem to have not moved forward in two weeks of contact with them. This is very distressing

Having spoken with you we are pleased that you have now got the supplies you need. We are meeting with Medequip to understand why the supply was disrupted so that it doesn't happen again. We'll call you to give you an update.

My son is a 14 yr old with severe physical disabilities and receives continence pads (Abri Form premium S4) via the Continence Service delivered by Mediquip. We haven't had any deliveries for some time and are now have only one packet left. When ringing Mediquip earlier in the week - they assured me that delivery would be today. Today I rang to be told they have no stock of this brand and have no idea when they will. They didn't seem to have/want to access my sons records so I have no idea when our delivery should be/ how many deliveries we have missed. No one either from Mediquip, or the Continence service have let us know of this problem, as a conequnce we have approximately 4 days worth of pads left and no way of getting any new ones soon, with Bank Holiday looming.

I would appreciate someone contacting me as soon as possible with any information that could be of help for us. We should have been informed of this problem before it became a real cause for concern.There should be procedures in place to inform parents/carers/clients of these sorts of problems and steps should be made to combat them?
