Bexley, Bromley & Greenwich Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich

Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust has a new trust wide perinatal mental health service. The service is based at Queen Mary’s Hospital and consists of a multidisciplinary team of professionals including team manager, consultant perinatal psychiatrists, specialist perinatal nurses, clinical psychologists, nursery nurses, OT, Social worker and administrators.

These are divided into three small teams for Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich. Each team works closely with midwives, obstetricians, health visiting, other secondary mental health services and children’s social services. There are close links with GPs, IAPT and third sector organisations (including Cocoon, MIND, and Mums Aid).

The service offers specialist assessment, care and treatment for women who are planning a pregnancy, pregnant or up to 12 months postnatal. The team offers a range of specialist interventions, including advice to help women weigh up the risks and benefits of using psychiatric medication in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Pre-birth planning meetings are organised for women with complex needs and severe mental illness at 32 weeks of pregnancy. Perinatal mental health clinicians work in close partnership with women and families and the other professionals involved in their care. This includes midwives, obstetricians, health visitors, GPs and, when needed, general adult mental health services, children and families social services and third sector organisations.  This ensures that women have the care and support they need to stay as well as possible and enjoy pregnancy and parenthood.

Referrals are accepted by email from a range of professionals. These include midwives, obstetricians, health visitors, GPs, other secondary mental health services, IAPT and social services.

A member of the service is available 9-5pm, during working hours to provide advice to professionals. The service does not offer crisis or emergency care.

Oxleas Patient Experience survey

The Oxleas Patient Experience survey gives you the opportunity to feedback on the care and treatment you have received. We also encourage your friends, family and carers to also provide feedback. Hearing your views gives us a better understanding of the needs of our patients, families and carers which helps us to make sure that we are providing a good standard of care.

The short survey only takes a few minutes to complete and you can provide a written comment explaining what you think is working well and what is not. The Patient Experience team will collect the results of the surveys and these are shared with the relevant departments and management teams. This helps us to shape our services to continually improve the quality of the care and treatment we provide.
