SALT: Pre-school speech sound groups

Short film by the Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service at Oxleas.

Children who are having difficulty producing clear speech may be invited to attend weekly speech sound therapy groups.

These groups are for children aged three and a half to five years old, who may be having difficulty pronouncing certain sounds, producing sounds accurately in words, or struggling with the coordination needed to speak clearly.

Following assessment, the Speech and Language Therapist and parent or carer will jointly decide if a child is appropriate to attend the group and parents and carers are required to attend a short workshop before a group place is offered.

Approximately five families attend each group and the children each have their own tailored speech sound pack.

Parents and carers are shown games, techniques and strategies to help their child and regular practice is expected at home.
