Our Adult Learning Disability Services introduced 27 year old Stephen and his family to the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) - showing a picture of what you need.
Before this, Stephen had very limited communication skills and would rarely join in activities or interact independently with people at his day centre.
Alun and Gill, Stephen's parents, also use PECS at home to help him choose things such as what he wants to eat or drink.
He now enthusiastically joins in activities and recently used PECS to order a burger and a shandy by himself.
"PECS has had a huge effect on Stephen - it's given him confidence and a voice," says Stephen's mother, Gill.
