Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service Bexley

Coronavirus

We are having to alter some of our services in response to the demands that Coronavirus is creating. This means that we may have less staff and will be unable to continue to provide services in the way we usually do. Therefore, we may need to do the following:

  • We may carry out consultations via phone or video call
  • The frequency of our visits for your care might be reduced
  • If the care you receive is not essential, it might be stopped for the time being.

We will speak with you about any new arrangements we need to put in place. We will inform any other people involved in your care of any changes made.

If you need to contact us, please call 0203 004 0092.

We would like to thank you for your understanding and cooperation at this time.

We assess and treat speech, language, and swallowing problems.  We provide specialist advice so that children and teenagers develop communication skills , to the best of their ability.

We help children and young people who have difficulties with:

  • understanding language
  • spoken language
  • speech sounds
  • social communication
  • a stammer
  • a voice problem
  • swallowing.

Who do we see?

  • Pre-school children registered, or about to register with a Bexley GP
  • School aged children attending a Bexley school
  • Young people aged 16 -19 years in full-time education in Bexley.

Referrals can be made by your Health Visitor, nursery staff, school teacher, a doctor or your GP.

You can also contact us to ask about a referral or for advice.

What do we do?

We support children and young people with communication difficulties or a physical swallowing difficulty.  By helping the child to communicate to the best of his or her ability we aim to improve learning, social skills and independence.

We advise nursery and school staff on resources.  We demonstrate activities and strategies to develop and support communication.  We also deliver workshops and training, so that nursery and school staff can support your child’s communication in everyday situations.

We provide appointments in clinics and early years centres for children under 5.

For children of school age we provide a clinic appointment if your child has a stammer, a disorder of speech, or a voice disorder.  For children and young people with speech delay, language or social communication difficulties we usually visit the school.

What happens next?

After the referral is received at Acorns SPA, the referral information is read by the Speech and Language Team.  An appointment is made for your child at a health site, children’s centre, at home or at school.

Oxleas Patient Experience survey

The Oxleas Patient Experience survey gives you the opportunity to feedback on the care and treatment you have received. We also encourage your friends, family and carers to also provide feedback. Hearing your views gives us a better understanding of the needs of our patients, families and carers which helps us to make sure that we are providing a good standard of care.

The short survey only takes a few minutes to complete and you can provide a written comment explaining what you think is working well and what is not. The Patient Experience team will collect the results of the surveys and these are shared with the relevant departments and management teams. This helps us to shape our services to continually improve the quality of the care and treatment we provide.

Just wanted to make an enquiry. We was told by my daughters special needs dept when she was really young (4 years ago) she needed speech therapy. Even though we disagreed. Now I’ve learned more than ONE MONTH after the meeting happened that the school have taken it upon themselves to have a meeting without us even knowing. Surely this should be our jobs to have this meeting as parents? Surely we should be involved in this discussion about our daughter? I’m confused why this has happened and why we knew nothing of this after so many years. Thanks! If I could be contacted I would be thankful.

Dear Sam

I am very sorry that there appears to be some confusion regarding Speech and Language Therapy. The manager of this service will be in contact with you. This will hopefully answer the concerns you have.

kind regards

Victoria Soper
Service Manager for Specialist Children Services

Hi we’ve recently just had a speech session with Charlie amd she said she’d be sending myself some information over to practice with daughter as well as sending forms to her school and doing a further referral, however I’ve had nothing via email or in the post.

Dear Holly

I'm sorry that you have experienced a delay in receiving the information from our service . I'm pleased that your daughter's therapist Charlie has since called you to apologise for the delay and has posted the information to you.

Kind Regards

Maria Tanner
Associate Director for Specialist Children Services

The page that says Start Call does not allow you to scroll down to select Start Call. Telephone support was not particularly successful. Very disappointed I missed my appointment because of this

Dear Joanne

I am sorry you had this experience with our Attend Anywhere system. You have now been in contact with one of our Speech and Language Therapists and an appointment has been arranged. Apologies for any inconvenience this has caused you.

kind regards

The number for single point of contact is not working. When you choose an option just repears itself. How are you meant to contact a service aside from using this advertised number?

Dear Bobby

We are sorry that you had difficulties contacting us today. I understand that you spoke to one of our administrators who has asked the manager of the speech and language service to contact you.

We will also update the message on our answerphone once the option for specialist services is chosen to make it clearer that the call is in a queue.

Kind regards
