Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service Greenwich

We are having to alter some of our services in response to the demands that Coronavirus is creating. This means that we may have less staff and will be unable to continue to provide services in the way we usually do. Therefore, we may need to do the following:

  • We may carry out consultations via phone or video call
  • The frequency of our visits for your care might be reduced
  • If the care you receive is not essential, it might be stopped for the time being.

We will speak with you about any new arrangements we need to put in place. We will inform any other people involved in your care of any changes made.

If you need to contact us, please call 0208 836 8621.

We would like to thank you for your understanding and cooperation at this time.

The Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Team provides specialist care and support for children aged 0-19 years with communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties.

Services are organised to provide support to children and their families in the most appropriate setting including homes, schools, nurseries, children centres and clinic environments.

The service supports young adults up to 25 years when they have an Education, Health and Care Plan in place.

How to access this service

Greenwich Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service has an open access policy for children which includes self referral. You can access our referral form here. To be eligible for our under 5s service, you will need to have a Greenwich GP.

For older children (5 and over) children's needs will be managed via their school. If your child attends a Greenwich school, you may be able access our school service even without a Greenwich GP.

If your GP or other health professional feels that your child needs a referral into the Speech and Language Therapy Service, they will make a referral on your behalf.

Locations: Various health centres and schools across the borough.

Oxleas Patient Experience survey

The Oxleas Patient Experience survey gives you the opportunity to feedback on the care and treatment you have received. We also encourage your friends, family and carers to also provide feedback. Hearing your views gives us a better understanding of the needs of our patients, families and carers which helps us to make sure that we are providing a good standard of care.

The short survey only takes a few minutes to complete and you can provide a written comment explaining what you think is working well and what is not. The Patient Experience team will collect the results of the surveys and these are shared with the relevant departments and management teams. This helps us to shape our services to continually improve the quality of the care and treatment we provide.

What is the current situation regarding drop ins after the recent lock down? Also am I able to do a self referral for my daughter to be assessed for her limited speech at 15 months?

Dear Sarah

Many thanks for contacting us regarding our Speech and Language therapy service in Greenwich. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to run the drop-in clinics due to Covid, however we would be happy to accept a self-referral for your daughter.

Please email our team at and someone will be in touch with further information.

Many thanks

I was told someone would contact me back in September and I haven’t heard anything since.

Dear Sabrina

I am sorry that you haven't heard back from the service. I understand that you have since received a telephone call from a senior Speech and Language therapist from the service to discuss your concerns. I hope that has helped to resolve your issues. Please let us know if there is anything further you would like us to do to help.

Many thanks

Hi does someone can help me with sort out video call for appointment how to do it or wich appsl

Dear Kamila

I am sorry for the confusion regarding your virtual appointment. A therapist from the team will call you immediately to help you.

Many thanks

Your website states that children over 5 can be seen after a referral from a nursery or a school. How about home educated children who do not go to school, and are over 5? How can a home educating family self refer? Issues with speech is not something a GP will see us for. Thank you for your advice in advance.

Thank you for your comment. The Greenwich Speech and Language therapy welcome referrals for all children over 5, including those that are home educated. If you would like an assessment of your child please send an email to requesting a referral to Speech and Language Therapy, outlining your concerns and reasons for the referral.

kind regards

Please can you update your website with the children’s speech therapy drop in sessions from October 2018 onwards. The information on your site currently ended in September. I am looking to attend one of the sessions with my little boy in the near future. Many thanks.

Dear Vanessa

Thank you for getting in touch with us.

The Speech and Language Therapy drop in clinic dates are now live on our website.

Please accept our apologies for the delay in advertising these.

Kind regards

My daughter (Aged 10) has ASD (Awaiting paeds referral), I have asked her school
If SALT can come into school to see/assess her and was told that nothing can be done until after the paeds assessment, which I understand can take over a year. Can I self refer?

Dear Denise

Many thanks for leaving a comment on our website.

Our Speech and Language Therapy Service would happily accept a referral for a child before they have been seen/assessed by a community paediatrician.

The pathway for school aged children within Greenwich is dependent upon which school a child attends; most schools commission an Oxleas Speech and Language Therapist but some schools commission an independent Speech and Language Therapist.

In order to ensure we have enough information to guide you on this correctly, one of our service leads for speech and language, therapists Julia Longthorne or Kath Piggott, will email you for a contact number. They will be able to advise you how your daughter can access speech and language therapy.

Kind regards

I went to Eglington Children's Centre this afternoon (28th Dec 2017), as per the information above it was supposed to open from 1:30 pm to 3:00pm for speech therapy, but it was closed. I was not the only one who was waiting there. There were at least 3-4 parents there and all returned home highly disappointed.
What a waste of valuable annual leave.

Dear Ajaya

We are sorry that you went to Eglinton Children's Centre on the 28th December to find that the centre was closed and the Speech and Language sessions were not running.

Unfortunately, due to the Children Centre's closures at Christmas we were unable to run this session. We updated this information on Oxleas website, and the Children Centre's Manager confirmed that they had updated the poster with Speech and Language drop in dates which excluded the 28th December and sent text messages to all registered families.

We acknowledge that some families may not have been registered and we have altered our posters to advise contacting Children Centres during holiday periods to ensure they are open.

We hope that you are able to attend one of the next Speech and Language drop in sessions at Eglinton Children Centre's, they are on every Thursday from 1.30 - 3.30pm.

We have also sent you a separate email.

Kind regards

Maria Tanner
Associate Director for Specialist Children Services

What age group does the service provide assistance upto, will i need to look into provate therapy for a 17 year old?

Dear Melek

Thank you for your query, a Speech and Language Therapist has telephoned you to talk through our service, I hope this has provided clarity.

Please see the local offer for other supports within Greenwich.

Please do also speak to the inclusion manager at the college, to discuss what reasonable adjustments can be made to support access to the curriculum/course.

Very helpful leaflets, handy for tips to give to parents and for signposting. Not sure if it's our printer but when you print the leaflets double sided, one side prints upside down (i.e. cannot be folded leaflet style)

Dear AS

I am pleased you found the leaflets helpful. Try printing double sided with the instruction "flip on short edge" - this should mean the leaflet prints the right way up. I have tried this today and it works. If you would like me to send you a printed leaflet please let me know.
