Mental Health Liaison Team (MHLT) - Greenwich

  • The Mental Health Liaison Team (MHLT) assesses the needs of patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to determine what clinical mental health support you need. This may include referring you to other specialist mental health services or signposting you to other community resources.

    MHLT is mainly an assessment team. However, if you remain in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, we may offer brief interventions and administer emergency medication, if appropriate.

    The team may provide advice and information regarding social needs, but we cannot resolve housing issues or homelessness, debt, or criminal justice issues.

    Assessments are carried out in the Emergency Department or on the inpatient wards. The team aims to respond within 60 minutes of receiving a referral from the Emergency Department and within 24 hours for inpatient referrals

Our team

The team consists of:

  • Senior mental health nurses
  • Medical staff
  • Two psychiatric consultants

Not all patients will see a consultant. However, consultants oversee and support all clinical decision-making in the team.

How to access this service

To access this service, you must be:

  • Aged 18-65
  • Registered as a patient at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital
  • Identified as having mental health difficulties
  • Referred to our team by hospital staff in either the Emergency Department or one of the hospital’s inpatient wards

Referrals

We do not accept referrals for:

  • Patients with purely social difficulties and circumstances
  • Patients whose primary problem is substance misuse
  • Reviewing medication prescribed by your GP or a Community Mental Health team
  • Providing prescriptions for regular medication
