Peter De Backer is a Clinical and Counselling Psychologist who has worked in NHS primary, secondary, tertiary, and inpatient mental health services since 1997.
He was appointed as a Consultant Psychologist in 2007 and has, since then, also been an Associate Clinical Director in Community Mental Health services and the Head of Psychological Therapies for the Acute & Crisis Directorate.
Peter is a Chartered Psychologist and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He has undertaken postgraduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, systemic psychotherapy, Mentalisation-Based Therapy, Cognitive Analytic Therapy and EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing).
His specialist clinical interest is in psychological trauma and, in particular, the impact of complex trauma on interpersonal functioning. He has taught on various doctoral level psychology programmes in and around London and has previously also been a senior lecturer in counselling psychology.
Peter is deeply committed to developing and promoting psychologically safe and compassionate multidisciplinary clinical care in the Acute and Crisis Directorate. He would like to see all staff develop their confidence and skills to be able to work collaboratively and effectively with our service users and their support networks.
