 Help in a crisis

A week to recognise our amazing carers

Visual from carers film launched for Carers Week 2026

This week (8 to 14 June) is International Carers Week – the perfect time to celebrate and show appreciation for our incredible unpaid partners in care.

At Oxleas, we’re committed to supporting our carers in any way we can to recognise their unwavering commitment and selflessness.

In addition to carers support groups and fun evenings out to network, we work closely with our carers who can offer insight and lived experience through co-production on projects that are important to them.

To mark International Carers Week, we’re showcasing an incredible piece of co-production work – our new Carers and Confidentiality Handbook.

We’ve taken a fresh approach to understanding confidentiality by working closely with carers, families and colleagues to co-produce this new guidance, which reflects real experiences and everyday challenges faced by carers.

Confidentiality is a complex and sensitive area, particularly in mental healthcare, where carers often play a vital role in supporting someone’s recovery.

Participants highlighted the importance of respect and trust, especially when sensitive personal information is involved. For many carers, confidentiality is not just about rules, but about relationships and reassurance that information is handled thoughtfully.

As a result, and by working together, we have developed clearer advice and a practical confidentiality handbook for carers and staff. This aims to support conversations and help everyone feel more confident about what can be shared and when.

Janice Williamson, Carer and Families Support Network Lead at Oxleas, said:

Our hope is that this approach will lead to better communication, stronger partnerships with carers and improved outcomes for service users.

While confidentiality will always involve careful judgement, creating space for open discussion is a positive step towards more person-centred care.

Filming and photography requests

We receive documentary, location and broadcast filming requests on a regular basis – we consider all proposals on an individual basis and will try to accommodate proposals where possible, if appropriate.

No photography or filming is permitted without prior arrangement and agreement. Our patients always come first and we have a duty to protect their safety and confidentiality. Anyone found filming or taking photographs on the trust premises without the permission of the trust’s communications team will be asked to leave by the security department and may face prosecution.

Unless agreed otherwise, film crews and photographers must be accompanied by a member of the Communications Team at all times.
