The event focused on health promotion in relation to ageing and improving access to healthcare services.
It was well attended with over 60 community leaders and members of the local Nepalese community attending.
The event was developed and delivered as a collaboration between Oxleas mental health and community health services, public health, primary care, CESI and other local VCSEs.
A variety of stalls and interactive mini workshops were provided concerning diabetes, heart health, brain health, memory, mood and mental wellbeing which received fantastic feedback from attendees.
All attendees agreed that they had a better understanding of healthy ageing and how to access support for each health topic covered; for example, participants described better understanding the role of insulin in diabetes, how to control your cholesterol levels and practical tips on reducing worry and improving sleep.
After lunch the opportunity was taken to consult with attendees, exploring what healthy ageing initiatives would be most impactful going forwards and potential for further collaborative working.
The discussions were really rich and will inform future community engagement initiatives.
This event builds on an ongoing collaboration between these organisations which has evolved over the last two years.
So far, our strategy to support the wellbeing of the Greenwich Nepali community has included providing a series of workshops on areas such as stress management, diabetes and brain health, which have been well attended (by 40-60 Nepali community members) and well received.
We have also co-created accessible health education resources, such as a video in Nepali on brain health and dementia awareness (see below).
Arka Timsina, CESI-UK Chair, said:
It was an excellent event, with our Nepali Community. Working together with Oxleas, proved to be very successful. The event marks a milestone in addressing the issues of health and wellbeing inequalities in Greenwich.
Japleen Kaur, Associate Director of Involvement and Community Engagement, added:
What a fantastic event with the Nepali community. It was filled with warmth, connection, and genuine engagement.
