Held within the main hall of the Leeds Armouries Museum, team members were there in person to receive their Healthcare Estates & Facilities Management Association 2026 Award for Sustainability.
Steve Wedgwood, Chief Estates Officer and Karen Janody, Sustainability Manager, accepted the award for Oxleas in front of 300 guests from NHS trusts across the country.
Our e-bikes project was shortlisted alongside the Oxleas in Bloom project and against strong opposition from other shortlisted trusts.
The e‑bike pilot is a sustainability‑focused initiative providing clinicians with a fleet of e‑bikes supported by newly installed charging and secure parking infrastructure at Memorial Hospital, in Woolwich.
The pilot has delivered strong, measurable outcomes. Uptake includes 47 staff registered on the booking system and 175 hours of training delivered to 21 staff and four service users. E‑bikes travelled 4,661 miles in year one, rising to 6,398 miles in 2025, generating 2.7 tonnes of CO₂e savings, equivalent to ten London to Edinburgh return flights or a year’s electricity use for an average UK home.
Productivity has increased, with clinicians reporting more consistent journey times and greater capacity to see patients.
The judges were particularly impressed with the project and its impact on the environment, staff wellbeing and patient care.
Steve Wedgwood said:
This is a fantastic achievement for the Estates and Facilities Team and for Oxleas, giving us national recognition for our e-bikes project and our wider sustainability work. I'm sure others will soon be aiming to replicate the project in their own trusts.
It was also great to see our Oxleas in Bloom project shortlisted for the Sustainability Award as well. A big well done to Karen and the wider team for creating and delivering this award-winning project.
