Jesse is on a mission to support the wellbeing of men in his community, particularly those of African and Caribbean heritage, who are at higher risk of conditions such as high blood pressure and prostate cancer.
I have long-standing, trusted relationships with my clients,” says Jesse. “Instead of asking men to go to healthcare services, why not bring those services to where they already feel at home? It’s a simple idea, but it works.
By offering free blood pressure checks in the barbershop and starting gentle, informed conversations about physical and mental health, he’s bringing vital healthcare awareness into a trusted, everyday setting.
Once a month, Jesse also hosts “jollof meetings” – evening sessions where men gather over food to talk openly about everything from mental health to fatherhood. These relaxed, welcoming events create a safe space for honest conversations, with no subject off-limits.
We recently visited Jesse at Headlinerz to see his work in action – watch our short film and be inspired by the difference one barber is making in his community.
As we mark Men’s Mental Health Week, Jesse’s work is a powerful reminder of the importance of open, accessible conversations around men’s wellbeing – and the role that trusted community spaces can play in supporting them.
