It’s a chance to celebrate the agenda-setting activists and grassroots groundbreakers delivering change.
This year, for the first time, we’re thrilled that our brand new community boxing gym at Goldie Leigh has made the list!
A boxing gym inside the NHS is not what most people expect, but our unique partnership with charity Off the Ropes is changing how mental health support can look.
Founded after sessions began on an inpatient ward, structured, non-contact boxing is used to help children and adults under our mental health services to improve their physical health, focus and confidence. Those receiving support from Oxleas can attend free as part of treatment, with affordable community sessions also available.
Dr Ify Okocha, Chief Executive of Oxleas NHS, said:
The benefits of boxing are well documented, providing a physical outlet for stress, frustration and pent-up emotions, in a controlled environment.
A gym like this helps create a sense of community and belonging, where people connect with one another, reducing feelings of isolation. As participants progress and master new skills, self-confidence and self-esteem grow and these skills extend beyond the ring, helping patients and service users with concentration and discipline in their everyday life.
In a year marked by political hostility, economic pressure and deepening inequality, we’re pushing back against narratives that divide.
Big Issue deputy digital editor, Sophia Alexandra Hall added:
Narrowing down our list to just 100 is always the hardest part. The 2026 nominations showed us how people are lacing together support and planting seeds for something fairer in the years ahead.
we’re kind we’re fair we listen we care
