Stories that matter in honour of World Alzheimer's Awareness Month

Daniel McWilliams from our Bromley Memory Service.

Danielle McWilliams, a trainee Clinical Psychologist with our Bromley Memory Service, has been collaborating with Bromley Central Library to produce high-quality information about Dementia, aimed at the general public, along with recommendations for books compiled by The Reading Agency

The books were first shared with patients and families at Bridgeways Day Hospital for them to review and the reviews are displayed at the library, alongside the awareness information to encourage greater awareness and distribution of trustworthy, accessible and sensitive reading material.

The reviews will remain up for the whole month of September in recognition of World Alzheimer's Awareness Month.

One reviewer writes:

There's a lot of misinformation on social media about Alzheimer's, this book (FAQs on Dementia by Tom Russ and Michael Huddleston) dispels some of that confusion.

Reviewers included people caring for their husbands, wives, a parent and even some young people from local Bromley schools, keen to learn about Dementia and inspire young people like them to do the same.

This project forms Danielle's final assignment for her doctorate - to undertake a community engagement project - but more importantly has offered patients and families opportunities to shape awareness within their local community.

Dr Angela Campbell, Principal Clinical Psychologist and avid booklover herself, had the original idea for the project some time ago and has supported its development.

Danielle said:

This really has been a team/community effort and huge thanks goes out to all of those who contributed.

Filming and photography requests

We receive documentary, location and broadcast filming requests on a regular basis – we consider all proposals on an individual basis and will try to accommodate proposals where possible, if appropriate.

No photography or filming is permitted without prior arrangement and agreement. Our patients always come first and we have a duty to protect their safety and confidentiality. Anyone found filming or taking photographs on the trust premises without the permission of the trust’s communications team will be asked to leave by the security department and may face prosecution.

Unless agreed otherwise, film crews and photographers must be accompanied by a member of the Communications Team at all times.
