HMP YOI Isis - Healthcare Services

  • Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust provides integrated primary care services within HMP YOI Isis - a Category C Young Offenders' Prison with a population of 622 in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

We have a patient-centred approach to healthcare services which replicates a community approach by providing in-house care through clinics and 24/7 nursing.

We have successfully set up Patient Council Meetings and have Healthcare Representatives who work collaboratively with patients to look at their needs and promote a positive patient experience. This has resulted in the publication of a monthly newsletter.

    Patients have access to:

    • 24/7 nursing
    • GP clinics
    • Nurse-led clinics, including LTC, phlebotomy, HEPC, sexual health, NHS health checks, triage and ACP
    • Mental health services, including counselling, psychological therapies, psychiatry, ADHD and neurodevelopmental services
    • Physiotherapy
    • Podiatry
    • Optometry
    • Dentistry
    • Pharmacy and medication management
    • X-ray and imaging facilities
    • Hearing screening
    • Occupational health

Our approach

Our trauma-informed approach enables patients to access support at the right level. This includes “no threshold” access to healthcare. We deliver integrated, responsive care based on “Making Every Contact Count” through highly trained professionals.

Our processes are designed to ensure no delays or gaps in care. We work at every step of the service user journey, from reception to release.

We ensure that our pathways are patient-centred rather than procedure-focused. Our integrated care model of working offers interventions that deliver a positive impact and better outcomes for our patients.

We obtain feedback via:

  • Individual interactions
  • Patient surveys
  • 'You said, we did' forums
  • Responding to and completing thematic reviews of complaints and compliments
  • Lessons from patient safety incidents

Our partnerships

We work closely with partner agencies and the prisons to guarantee an integrated, whole-prison approach.

We worked collaboratively with NHS England to develop the New Models of Care Pathways. These focus on engaging with marginalised and disadvantaged service users and meeting their full range of needs. It also means involving patients in their care and delivering interventions that address their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being.

Oxleas prison service

Currently, Oxleas is the largest NHS provider of prison healthcare services in the UK. We deliver all healthcare services within the prison setting. This includes:

  • Physical health
  • Mental health
  • Allied health services
  • Substance misuse services
  • Inpatient units (physical and mental health)

We serve populations of men, women and young people in all categories of prison, from open to high security.

We monitor quality and performance through the three following domains - Patient Experience, Patient Safety and Clinical Effectiveness.
