Vulval and vaginal health

Vulval skin care — tips for healthy skin

Good vulval skin care helps prevent itching, dryness, soreness, and lets you spot changes early.

What is the vulva?

The vulva is the visible part of female genitalia, including the inner and outer lips (labia) and clitoris. The skin is delicate and easily irritated.

How to care for your vulval skin

  • Wash gently once a day using an emollient like Hydromol or E45 (available from pharmacies).

  • Use your hand, not a cloth or sponge, and rinse carefully.

  • Pat dry with a soft towel, then apply emollient again.

  • Keep emollients away from flames — they are flammable.

What’s normal?

Vulvas come in all shapes, sizes, and colours. Know what’s normal for you and watch for any changes. Avoid irritants like scented soaps, wipes, panty liners, and fragranced laundry products.

Preventing irritation

  • Avoid irritant products

  • Trim rather than shave pubic hair

  • Wear loose cotton underwear

  • Use plain white toilet paper

  • Apply unscented moisturizers regularly

Safety with emmollients

  • Emollients are flammable — keep away from fire and heat

  • Use clean spoons to avoid infection

  • Be careful in the bath or shower to prevent slipping.

If you notice unusual changes or discomfort, please book an appointment.
